The Genetrix, Bastón Blanco Inteligente, Neuropirrol and Lacto Sano projects all triumphed in the latest edition of the TecSalud Scientific Entrepreneurial Award, standing out from the other teams with their participation in the Binational Nodo Health Innovation Program. The program is a joint initiative between the EGADE Business School, the Mexican Institute of Social Security, the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos and the Biotechnology Institute of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and is financed by Conacyt. It seeks to inspire a generation of start-ups and encourage the application of scientific research in Mexico, promoting a practical focus among researchers aimed at innovation and resolving social issues.
This prize, which was awarded at the INCmty enterprise festival, brought together the nine representatives of the best scientific projects carried out between May and July this year, in the Santa Fe campus of Monterrey Tec.
“Dr. Fernando Castilleja, the Director of Innovation and Enterprising from TecSalud announced, “This prize is sponsored by TecSalud, the Health System of Monterrey Tech, in collaboration with Conacyt and Egade Business School, in order to achieve the prize, every team must pitch their proposals before a panel of judges, made up of recognized scientists, successful health entrepreneurs and led by Professor Rafael Yuste from Columbia University” .
The TecSalud Scientific Entrepreneurial Award 2017 was awarded in two categories:
- Scientific and Social Impact Projects
First Place: Genetrix, a team made up of Dr. Verónica Rodríguez López and Dr. Miriam Ramírez Carillo. It is a plant molecule naturally based solution for the treatment of cervical cancer.
Second Place: Neuropirrol, a polymer based project to protect injuries and reconnect the spinal cord, presented by Dr. Hermelinda Salgado Ceballos and Dr. Rodrigo Mondragón Lozano

First Place: Bastón Blanco Inteligente, made up of Gabriela Gallardo Hernández and Nahúm Quijas Hernández who proposed an idea of fitting sonar into the sticks carried by blind people to detect obstacles and avoid knocks to the middle and upper body.
Second Place: Lacto Sano, a team made up of Dr. Jorge Alberto Reyes Esparza; LAG & LAP Ricardo Sotelo Alemán and LF Gabriela Marquina, with a project to remove the lactose from breast milk.
Other teams participating included Bio IT Plus, anti-arrhythmogenic and anti-inflammatory gel, assistive devices, prosthesis of the upper limbs and DX Respiratory Panel.
This prize was awarded thanks to the impetus and collaboration of TecSalud, Conacyt, I-Corps and other important participating institutions. The winners were awarded investment and monitoring of their projects, with the First Place and Second Place of each category being awarded an amount of $50,000 pesos and $40,000 pesos respectively.
